What Kryspal Media is
Kryspal Media is a media server for your own movies and series. You point it at your folders, it builds a library with posters and details, and you watch on your own devices. This page explains what it does and what it deliberately does not do.

What it does#
- Builds libraries from your files. It scans your folders, recognizes titles, seasons and episodes, and fills in details and images.
- Works with the players you already use. Infuse, SenPlayer and other third-party players that speak the Emby or Jellyfin protocol can connect. You choose which kind to support in First-time setup, or later in System settings. There is also an option for Kryspal's own players only.
- Comes with the Kryspal web player and an admin console. Watch in a browser, and manage libraries, members, plugins, tasks and server settings from the admin console.
- Handles remote files. Cloud-drive and remote files (.strm) can be played too. See strm and cloud drives.
- Can move over from another server. Migration import brings libraries, members and watch history from an existing Emby or Jellyfin server.
- Grows with plugins. Metadata, subtitle and playback extras are plugins. See Plugins.
What it does not do#
- It does not transcode video. Your files play in their original quality. Players decode them directly, so the player or device must be able to play the format.
- It does not burn subtitles into the picture. Subtitles are delivered as separate tracks.
- Your media folders are read-only by default. Kryspal writes to them or deletes files in them only when you turn on subtitle download, Write back NFO and images, or Allow deletion on a library.
- It does not protect the public internet for you. For access from outside your network, use an HTTPS reverse proxy or a VPN.
How it runs#
It runs in Docker, with its own PostgreSQL database in a second container. It needs no powerful CPU, since there is no transcoding. See System requirements and Install with Docker.
