Account sync

Account sync connects a member's account on another service to this server, so what you watch is shared in both directions. It works through a sync plugin that you install from the plugin center, and it is free on every plan.

Before you start#

The administrator installs and turns on a sync plugin under Plugins. Until one is on, Account sync has nothing to link.

  1. Open the web player and choose Settings, then Account sync.
  2. Find the plugin and select Link. The page shows a short code and an address.
  3. Open the address on any device, sign in to the other service, and enter the code.
  4. The page switches to Linked and shows your account name.

Each member links their own account. Linking does not need the administrator, and nobody else on the server can see your account name.

What it does#

Three switches, all on after you link. Only the ones the plugin supports are shown.

  • Report while watching. Playback starts, pauses and stops are sent to the other service.
  • Import watched. What you watched there is marked as watched here.
  • Export watched. Titles you mark as watched here are sent there.

Right after you link, the server imports once and then exports what you have already watched here that the other service does not have. It never deletes anything on the other side. After that it imports every 6 hours, and once a week it reads your full history again, so entries you added there for the past are picked up too. Sync now runs it at once.

The rules#

  • It only adds. A title watched there is marked as watched here, and the later watch time is kept. A title that is not watched there never un-marks one that is watched here.
  • Marking as unwatched here is not sent. It does not remove anything on the other service.
  • Finished playback is not counted twice. When a play is reported at the end, the title is not exported again later.
  • Titles are matched by their TMDB, IMDb or TVDB number. A title without any of these is skipped, and the page shows how many were skipped.
  • Child accounts work too, because each member links their own account.

Privacy#

The key that lets this server act for you is stored encrypted on your own server. It never appears in logs or in answers to other members, and the administrator sees only how many members have linked, not who. Unlink deletes it at once, even when the other service cannot be reached.

If the administrator turns the plugin off, links are kept and syncing pauses until it is turned on again.

If something is wrong#

  • Needs to be linked again. The other service no longer accepts the saved key (for example you revoked it there). Select Link again.
  • Nothing syncs. Check that the plugin is on in the admin console and that the switches you need are on.
