Parental controls

PRO · MAX Decide what a child's account can watch, when, and for how long. Administrators are not affected by parental controls.

Set it up for a member#

  1. Open Members and choose Edit on the member.
  2. Open Parental controls and turn on Restrict this member.
  3. Set the rules below and save.

Without a PRO or MAX license you can see the settings but cannot save changes.

What you can set#

  • Age: the highest age the member may watch (0 to 18). Ratings such as PG-13, TV-14 or FSK 12 are converted to an age, and anything above is blocked. PG-13 counts as 13, so a limit of 12 hides it. Titles without a rating use Age assumed for unrated titles.
  • Blocked tags and Blocked genres: titles with these are blocked even if the age fits.
  • Exceptions: add a title and choose Allow or Block.
    • Allow lets the title through regardless of age, tags and genres. For a series it applies to the whole series.
    • Block always blocks the title. It has the highest priority.
  • Viewing hours: choose days and a start and end time for each window. A window can cross midnight, for example Friday 20:00 to Saturday 01:00 (next day). Times follow the server's time zone. Any time removes the restriction.
  • Daily limit: the most time per day, added up across devices and counted by the server's date. No limit turns it off.
  • Allow downloads: members under parental controls cannot download by default. Turn this on to allow it.

Templates#

Save a set of rules as a template, for example "Young kids" or "School age", and apply it with Apply template. Applying copies the rules, so later edits to the template do not change members who already used it.

Manage templates, the rating conversion table and Age assumed for unrated titles under System → Parental controls.

What the member sees#

  • Blocked titles do not appear in lists or search, and cannot be opened for playback.
  • Outside the viewing hours, or after the daily limit, playback cannot start. The member sees when they can watch next.
  • With MAX, the Analytics member details show daily time used, blocked attempts and recent records.

Good to know#

  • Parental controls apply only on this server. A child using an account on another server is not affected.
  • Create a separate account for each child. Do not share an administrator account.
  • If your license ends or is downgraded, existing parental control settings are kept but cannot be edited. They can be edited again once you have a license.
