FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people ask first. Not here? Write to us.

What is Kryspal Media?

A self-hosted media server. It runs on your own NAS or server, organizes your own media, and plays it in Kryspal’s own players or in 3rd-party players for Emby and Jellyfin.

Does it transcode video?

No. Video is always delivered as it is stored. In the browser, only audio is converted when a browser cannot play a format. Subtitles are never burned into the picture.

What if my device cannot play a file?

Because video is not converted, the player must support the file’s format. Most current players handle common formats. If one does not, try another player or the web viewer.

Which players work?

Kryspal Media works with 3rd-party players for Emby and Jellyfin, such as Infuse, VidHub and SenPlayer, and has Kryspal’s own players. You pick one mode in the admin console: Emby, Jellyfin, or Kryspal-native only. One at a time.

Do I have to pay?

FREE is for personal use. PRO and MAX are paid plans that give a better experience. Paid plans are free during the public beta. See Pricing.

Where is my data?

On your server. Your library, members and watch history never leave it. The FREE plan never contacts our license service; paid plans send five technical fields and nothing about what you watch. See Privacy.

What do I need to run it?

A machine or NAS that runs Docker with Compose v2, and a folder of media. The install guide, one Docker Compose file that NAS systems use too, arrives with the first release.

Where does metadata come from?

From metadata sources that you enable as plugins, and from NFO files next to your media. Some sources ask for your own free API key, which you enter in the admin console.

Can I move from Emby or Jellyfin?

Yes. The admin console imports libraries, members, watch history and favorites. Passwords cannot be migrated. See the migration guide.

Can I watch away from home?

Yes, if you make your server reachable yourself, for example through a reverse proxy or a VPN. Kryspal Media does not provide a relay service.

Is there a phone or TV app?

Use a 3rd-party player for Emby or Jellyfin, such as Infuse or SenPlayer, or open the web viewer in a browser. It works on phones and tablets.

What happens if my paid license ends?

Your data is kept. Only paid features and higher limits stop, and they return as soon as the license is valid again.

Which languages does it speak?

The viewer and the admin console come in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
