MAX features in detail

MAX has every PRO feature (see PRO features in detail), plus unlimited members, devices and simultaneous streams, and the four features below that only MAX has. For the limits and a table of all plans, see Compare plans. What your own server has unlocked is always shown on the License page in the admin console.

On this page
  1. Unlimited members, devices and simultaneous streams
  2. Analytics dashboard
  3. Smart people care
  4. Duplicate video care
  5. Custom poster badges

Unlimited members, devices and simultaneous streams#

What it is. MAX puts no limit on members, devices or the number of streams playing at once. FREE allows 3 members, 6 devices and 3 streams; PRO allows 10, 20 and 8.

What it does for you. Family, relatives and friends can each have their own account and watch history, every device can sign in, and as many people as you like can watch at the same time.

How to use it. Nothing to set up. The limits disappear as soon as the license is active. The License page shows your current usage.

Without a license. The limits go back to FREE or PRO. Members and devices over the limit are not deleted, but they have to wait until you upgrade or adjust the list you keep. Devices that signed in later can still browse but cannot play.

Details: Members, Devices and simultaneous streams.

Analytics dashboard#

What it is. The full view of the Analytics page: overall, members, titles, and the details of a single member.

What it does for you. See at a glance who watches, what, and when. To find out how long your child watched today, or how many plays parental controls blocked, open the member details. You can also see which titles nobody ever played, or whose data is incomplete and needs attention.

How to use it. Open Analytics, choose a library and a time range (today, 7 days, 30 days, all or custom), then switch between Overall, Members, Titles and Member.

Without a license. FREE and PRO see only the four summary cards at the top of the Overall page (plays, watch time, members who watched, and completion rate). The Titles page and the member details need MAX.

Details: Parental controls explains what the member details show.

Smart people care#

What it is. A set of tools for tidying person records: a check of the whole library, handling of items to confirm and ID conflicts, finding possible duplicates, splitting a person, and moving credits.

What it does for you. When one actor has two records, or two actors with the same name are mixed into one, "their titles" on the person page turns messy and incomplete. Tidy up once, and clicking an actor shows exactly what they were really in.

How to use it.

  1. Open Content → People, and in the "…" menu choose Re-judge all old flags so the background check covers the whole library.
  2. Choose Only to confirm in the banner at the top and work through them. Open a person, compare the candidates, then merge, or choose Confirm identity → Confirm.
  3. When needed, use Split or Move credits on the person's Actions tab.

The server never merges anyone on its own. Every merge is confirmed by you.

Without a license. Merging by hand, editing and filling in details stay free.

Details: Actors and people.

Duplicate video care#

What it is. Finds files of the same title across your whole library (movies or shows with the same ID) and merges them into one title with several versions.

What it does for you. When the same film sits in both Movies and 4K Movies, it shows up twice in your lists. After merging there is one, you pick the version when you play, and watch history is combined: watched in any version counts as watched.

How to use it.

  1. Open Content → Duplicates. Titles are grouped by ID, and you can filter by library and source.
  2. In a group, choose a main version with Set as main version, then choose Merge into one title and confirm. No file is moved or renamed.
  3. If it is not really a duplicate (for example two different cuts), choose Ignore this group.

Without a license. Versions in the same folder are still combined into one title when scanning, and merging shows by TMDB ID and splitting versions stay free.

Details: Duplicate videos.

Custom poster badges#

What it is. Poster badges are small labels drawn over a poster, such as 4K or a subtitle mark. The built-in badges are free in the web player and the apps. With MAX you can also add your own rules that match an item tag, and draw the badges onto the posters that third-party players receive.

What it does for you. In a third-party player you can see at a glance which titles are 4K or have subtitles, or which ones you tagged yourself, without opening each one.

How to use it.

  1. Open System → Appearance and find Poster badges. All badges are off by default. Turn on the ones you want, rename them, change their order and colors. Up to 3 badges are shown at a time, in the order you set, and the web player and the apps draw them over the poster without changing the image. A badge text uses only English letters, digits and common symbols, up to 8 characters.
  2. To add a rule of your own, use Add a custom rule and enter a value and the badge text. A rule can match a resolution, subtitles (optionally one language), HDR or only Dolby Vision, or a tag. A tag rule matches all of an item's tags together, ignoring case: tags from metadata sources, tags you added by hand and tags a recognition plugin read from the file name (see Tags). Save with Save badge settings.
  3. For third-party players, open the library's settings and turn on Draw badges on posters for third-party players. The original image is kept; turn the switch off to go back. The web player and the apps ignore this switch. Third-party players here means players that connect over the Emby protocol, such as Infuse, SenPlayer and VidHub. The badge is drawn into the poster image they receive.
  4. The server draws the badge into an image, which is why the text is limited to English letters, digits and common symbols, 8 characters at most. If you use Chinese tags, pick a short Latin text for the badge, such as SUB or UC. Several tags can share the same badge text; it is shown only once.

Without a license. Custom rules and the library switch for third-party players need MAX. Your saved settings are kept and work again when the license is back.
