Duplicate videos
The same movie often exists as several files, such as 1080p and 4K, or theatrical and director's cut. Kryspal Media can show them as one title with several versions. This page covers merging versions, merging series, splitting versions apart, and finding duplicates across a whole library.

Several versions of one movie#
Put the files of one movie in the same folder. The scan combines them into one multi-version movie automatically.
- The movie appears once in lists.
- When you play it, you can pick a version. The first one plays by default.
How to name the files so they are recognized as versions of one movie is explained on the file and folder naming page.
Show a series spread over folders as one#
If one series is split over several folders (for example seasons 1–3 in one and season 4 in another), they can be shown as one series when they have the same TMDB ID.
- Open Libraries, then the library, then Settings → Edit settings.
- Turn on Merge series with the same TMDB ID.
- Save. The result updates in the background and may take a few seconds.
No files are moved or changed. On a series page, the Merging section lets you split one show off, merge it into another show, or Restore auto.
Split versions#
You can split merged versions at any time. Each file then becomes its own title again and reappears with its original date added.
In Content → Duplicates, use Split versions on the title.
Find duplicates across the whole library MAX#
The same movie can sit in different folders (for example Movies and 4K Movies). Content → Duplicates finds these for you.
How it finds them#
Movies and series that share a TMDB, IMDb or TVDB ID are listed as one group. You can look at one library or all libraries by using the Library and Source filters. When the same set of titles is a duplicate by more than one ID, it is listed once, with an Also duplicated by … note naming the other IDs.
Merge into one title with several versions#
- In a group, pick the one to be the main version with Set as main version.
- Click Merge into one title, then confirm Merge.
What happens:
- Only the main title appears in lists. The others become its versions.
- Files are not moved or renamed. Every file stays where it was.
- Watch history is combined. If any copy is watched, it counts as watched. If any is a favorite, it is a favorite. Play counts add up. The playback position comes from the copy played most recently.
Only movies in the same library can be merged. For series use the setting Merge series with the same TMDB ID above.
Not a duplicate#
Two titles with the same ID may really be different cuts that you want to keep apart. Click Ignore this group. The group is not suggested again unless a new file joins it. To bring an ignored group back, open Ignored groups and click Restore. Ignore all marks every group under the current filter at once; each can still be restored one by one.
You can also delete the extra entry with Delete this one.
Limits#
Filtering and sorting by resolution, HDR and codec only look at the main title's main version.
